I didn't know I would be crying this morning. Thank goodness I'm at home reading this. It's aways so hard to lose a pet. My cats are starting to get up there in age and I just know how hard that is going to be when they start saying goodbye. I know that I provide them the best possible care, but when it is time they let us know. You guys are such great stewards. Thank you so much for the update and we are on this journey with you.
I hope you both had wonderful birthdays! Your little get-away sounds like heaven! 🍁🍂☕️
Molly-Max, I just love him! He’s one tough boy, prancing around in his shoes. So much personality. So much determination to keep living his life at LDF. Give him a kiss on the nose for me. Don’t forget to give Dominic one too! Love those boys! 😘😘
Most of us who have animals always do what's best for them that's within our power. (There ARE outliers who don't treat their animals well.) Molly Max is loved by those he knows and those he doesn't. It's always a hard decision to put any of our fur babies down, but we HAVE to do what is best for them when we see thir quality of life is diminished . Sending all of you hugs of support.
I never imagined crying over a donkey I've never met, but here we are. I had begun to fear the worst when you reduced news about the boys. We know you'll always do what's best for all your fur babies. Hugs to you all!
Always the hardest part of having a fur baby....letting them tell you when it's time. 💔 In the meantime, he's rocking those sexy boots and getting all the love!
Thank you and Chris…..and Dominic for giving Molly Max the best of the best years……love and care!!!! My heart is full just because MM has had the kind of love most (including humans) can only imagine and hope for! ❤️
Love being able to peep with you and Chris! Gorgeous 🍁 and 🌳 as far as the eye can see. Denise said it for all of us - we are all with you on your journey wherever it takes you, Chris, the furmers, the ladies, and certainly Dominic and Molly Max. We have every confidence that you both always put the needs of your dear animals first no matter how much that can tear at your heart. Big hugs to you both and special kisses to MM. 😘
I’ve always believed that when we take a precious animal into our lives we sign an invisible contract. A contract to love them, care for them, nourish them, and in exchange for all the love and affection we will know, stick with them through the very end, easing their suffering, and making their last moments filled with love and comfort.
But damn, that last part is brutal on the soul. And it’s heartbreaking gearing up for it. Having had to say goodbye to several furry family members, I’ve come to understand there is no way to rehearse the grief, or get some of it out of the way. I know that it hurts like hell through the entire process. But one thing helps for certain—having zero regrets just like you mention, Sarah.
Please keep us posted. Use your online family to share when you need to. We will laugh with you at Molly-Max’s antics and his cute booties, we will cheer with you at his triumphs, and we will cry with you when it’s time.
In the meantime, we all have profound respect for what you and Chris have done to care for him and for what you are doing to see MM through to the end of his natural days. And I, like the others, wish you and Chris the happiest of birthdays, surrounded by the love of your donkeys, kitties, and hens. You give them all such wondrous lives!
Thank you for the update and for being such loving humans to Molly-Max. While I know all practical considerations are important, I second the recommendation to dig the hole and cover it with a tarp so that doesn’t have to be a consideration. Then you can best follow MM as he lets you know what he needs. Having had to put several beloved pets to sleep, I know that the knowledge that we did everything for them and respected them above all is what brought me the most peace. Lots of love to everyone at the LDF and happy birthday to my fellow Libras!!!
You guys are truly loving parents to all of your furbabies and I am sure that you and Molly- Max will work out what is best for him.
(I didn’t respond to the dahlia tubers inquiry because I really have no place to store them over the winter, however, come Spring if you are looking to cull out some tubers, I’d be glad to buy some from you.-P.S. I've managed to to keep a few dahlia plants blooming in my yard by covering with an old bedsheet. We also hav en’t had a hard freeze here yet.)
Thank you Rosemary. I've actually seen people just store them in their house or in the fridge even...there's so many interesting ways to make it work if you have just a few!
As I type this I’m having tears run down my face for Molly-Max. 💔I believe he will let you know when he is ready. I know you both love, care and show him kindness and respect. That is truly all one can as for in life. A huge kiss to Molly-Max and one for Dominic.
Thank you thank you we really enjoyed this birthday. And you're right - he'll let us know. He's been slowing down as of late and we'll keep a close eye on him for sure.
Wishing you both a very happy birthday! It’s always important to take time to celebrate each other’s existence!! 🥰
Thank you for sharing the news on MM. We all will need time to prepare for saying goodbye but especially you and those close to him. This is the worst and best part of animal ownership. To be able to give them the best love and care in their final days and then being with them as they pass over is exactly what they need and deserve! You and your team will do what’s best for MM! And we will all be here to grieve with you. Sending hugs to all of you 💕💕💕
Gosh they take a piece of us with them don't they! I always thought our time with him may be short but I really had hoped he'd have a lot more good years in him. Time will tell us.
You’ve done such a great job with Molly-Max! I live and work on an equine retirement farm and have had to deal with the tough decision of letting an aged horse go through another winter or not. It’s not an easy one, especially when it’s only really their feet that have gone bad and otherwise they’d be ok. It’s a sucky decision but also being in pain, walking on frozen ground, even with orthotic boots can still be rough on them. Stone bruises and abscesses are common with hard ground.m. Seems like you’ve gotten great advice and have done the best care for him on all fronts!
Just a suggestion: you could go ahead and dig the hole earlier and cover the soil you’d use to fill with tarps. The process is part of the grief of loss. Keep on loving him up as always - he’s incredibly lucky to have you and Chris! ❤️
That's the hardest part and something our farrier always says--he's pretty good everywhere else except those two sad front hooves. That kills me. Just wish we could give him some kind of prosthetics or something to get him off those sore feet so he could have more pain free days and a whole lot more time.

Echoing all of your words as tears roll down my face.
I know - and we're not even to that point yet!
Thank you - you're so right it's the hardest thing to let them go and saying goodbye always feels impossible.
I hope you both had wonderful birthdays! Your little get-away sounds like heaven! 🍁🍂☕️

We're not quite there yet I just know and can tell we're getting closer and I really hate that. Thank you for your love and concern.

He just is beyond cute in those boots - I'm so glad we got them!

I'm glad he finally got some good years after having such a long and hard and horrid life. He deserves it.
